Collections Management

Museums have a unique responsibility to collect objects that reflect their mission.  Management responsibilities of museums to their collections include:

  • Acquisition of collections consistent with the museum’s mission
  • Exhibiting, storing and moving objects is to be done using the utmost in care
  • Disposal of collections by trade or sale will be as carefully considered as the acquisition of objects
  • Loans made only to responsible institutions
  • Maintaining an up-to-date collections policy
  • Maintaining clear title to all objects with clearly delineated methods of documentation
  • Objects in the collection are documented and inventoried
  • Providing for the permanent protection of objects through careful stewardship and sustainability
  • Respecting all laws and traditions concerning the exhibition or collection of sacred or funerary objects
